Liposuction surgery improves body shape and contour by removing exercise-resistant fat under sterile condition by using different thickness tubes and a vacuum device. The tumescent technique is used where a solution containing local anesthetic with epinephrine (medication that constrict small blood vessels) to decrease postoperative bruising and swelling. Liposuction is commonly performed on upper and lower abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, upper arms, under the chin, cheeks, calves, ankles and around the under arms.
BEFORE LIPOSUCTION SURGERY:
Prior to surgery, a medical history is taken in order to evaluate the general health of the patient as well as detail dietary and physical activity history. A careful examination is conducted to evaluate skin quality, presence of skin looseness, stretch marks, hernias and the amount of fat collection. The physician and the patient discuss the type of anesthesia, the procedure, scar sizes and locations, risks and complications. Patient is also informed that liposuction is not a replacement for a good diet and exercise regimen.
THE PROCEDURE:
After marking the areas of interest, a medicated solution is injected through small incisions that are usually hidden in naturally occurring skin folds or lines. Then by using the same incision sites special tubes with various sizes and forms the excess fat is removed without traumatizing any other surrounding tissue. The two sides are compared and symmetry is accomplished. The incision sites are usually closed by using sutures.
PROCEDURE TIME:
Depending on the number of areas and the amount of fat present, the time may vary from 1 to 2 ½ hours.
AFTER SURGERY:
Return to work varies from patient to patient depending on the number of sites treated, type of work, and the amount of fat removed. After the procedure, there will be small amount of drainage for the first 12 hours. There is going to be some swelling and bruising. In order to prevent excessive swelling and allow better shaping, an elastic garment (corset) will be placed on the body after surgery. The final shape and size reduction will not be noticeable for few weeks after the surgery.
RISK & COMPLICATIONS:
There are inherent risks and complications associated with liposuction surgery. These include scaring, swelling, bruising, hematoma, bleeding, infection, asymmetry, rippling, skin sensation changes, and pigmentation (skin color) changes. Patients can minimize risks and complications by carefully following instructions given by the surgeon
